In suspected anaphylaxis, the priority is to reverse the life-threatening airway and circulation changes as quickly as possible. Epinephrine is the key medicine because it rapidly tightens blood vessels to raise blood pressure, relaxes airway muscles to improve breathing, and reduces swelling that can block the airway. Because of how fast this can deteriorate, you administer epinephrine as soon as you suspect anaphylaxis if your protocol authorizes it and you’re trained to do so. This acts immediately to halt progression, giving time for additional care and transport.

Relying on oxygen alone doesn’t address the underlying cause, and waiting for EMS can delay a critical intervention. Calling for help is important, but it doesn’t replace the need for the life-saving medication when you’re authorized to give it. If your protocol allows, give the epinephrine now, then continue to monitor the patient, provide supportive care, and arrange for further medical help.
